Not the first Caste-based murder of Thirunelveli
On the dusk of 25th November, 2024, Muthukrishnan from Indira colony, Suthamalli, Thirunelveli, was hacked to death by caste Hindus. The incident occurred in the nearby pit, after he was isolated from his group of 5 people, consisting of Muthukrishnan himself, 21 year olds – Kathiresan and kaurthapandi, 18 year old Marimuthu and 17 year old Balamurugan. The murder had taken place on account of a prior issue, going back to a year ago, on the school annual day, between caste hindus and the Dalits.
Balasubramanian and
Veluthai, the brother and mother, of Muthukrishnan, respectively, state that
they had filed counter cases but had not received a summon to court to produce
their witness and evidences.
The group pf 5 were
chased by 8 caste Hindus, out of which only 4 of them have surrendered, but not
arrested. The others have not been identified nor has the procedural
investigation been carried out. The government has failed the victim’s family,
as no government official, except for the Superintendent of Police of
Thirunelveli have visited them personally. The collector, tahsildar or RTO have
made no visits or inquired about the same.
This isn’t the first
murder that Suthamalli is facing, it is one of many. The caste Hindus murder
the Dalits in cold blood, when they secure a means of better livelihood for
themselves. No person from the Dalit community is able to secure a job or get
accepted into workspaces due to the hindrances caused by the caste Hindus, who
file fabricated cases against the former. They are unable to receive or ask for
their rightful justice and held back from filing complaints or holding peaceful
protests.
Since the year of 2021,
the number of caste killings have increased manifold in the district of
Thirunelveli. The people have started losing hope as they’ve spent their lives
fighting for justice, all to end up in vain.
