Celebrating the underrepresented.
The Neelam Cultural Centre, under the stewardship of filmmaker Pa. Ranjith, marked a milestone as its signature event, Margazhiyil Makkalisai, celebrated its 5th anniversary in the festival circuit. Held from December 27 to December 29, 2024, at the Santhome Higher Secondary School in Mylapore, the festival spotlighted the rich music and cultural traditions of marginalized and oppressed communities that often remain underrepresented on mainstream platforms.
The three-day event witnessed a remarkable turnout, with over 1,000 attendees gathering to enjoy the festivities, some even congregating outside to catch glimpses of the vibrant performances. Featuring over 100 artists, many making their debut appearances, the festival presented a kaleidoscope of art forms including gaana, parai, rap, and oppari. These performances showcased the diverse cultural tapestry of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Kerala.
The festival attracted a host of notable personalities, including filmmakers, musicians, government officials, writers, and other dignitaries, all of whom came to celebrate and honor the participating artists. Pa. Ranjith, who also hosted the event, took the opportunity to address pressing political and social issues in his address to the audience.
One of the festival's highlights was the prestigious Makkalisai Maamani award ceremony on the final day. The award, accompanied by a cash prize, was bestowed upon artists Sir Muppili and Sir V. Chellamuthu, recognizing their lifelong dedication to their crafts. The awards were presented by renowned actor Vijay Sethupathi, who graced the occasion as the chief guest.
Margazhiyil Makkalisai 2024 successfully brought culture and inclusivity to the forefront, fulfilling its mission of celebrating the music and heritage of marginalized communities. The festival not only provided a platform for talented artists but also underscored the importance of preserving and honoring these rich cultural traditions.
